It's called xylazine. It is an anesthetic for veterinary use. None of us would have ever known its name if it weren't for the fact that drug traffickers in recent years have begun to use it to cut heroin in massive quantities. The zombie drug is easy to find, cheap, and in a very short time produces the effect that people who use it are most looking for: not feeling any emotion. No pain, no anger, no loneliness. This substance totally anesthetizes those who take it and makes them, in fact, Zombies. The extraordinary document created by Faraboni tells us about Kensington Avenue in Philadelphia and he tells it with images like so many punches to the gut to our illusions.
"I had read about this drug," says Faraboni, "I knew that in Philadelphia there is a high concentration of users, a community of six thousand people in a single quadrangle of the city and I went to see. I found myself with Bruce Gilden and another photographer documenting this huge disaster." Staggering bodies, arms battered by gangrenous sores, garbage, desolation and above all the chilling indifference of society to outside those margins: Faraboni's goal is ruthlessly meticulous in presenting all this to us.

Si chiama xilazina, e sarebbe un anestetico per uso veterinario di cui nessuno di noi avrebbe mai conosciuto il nome, se non fosse che i trafficanti di droga negli ultimi anni hanno iniziato ad usarla per tagliare l’eroina in quantità più o meno massicce. La droga zombie è facile da reperire, costa poco e ottiene in tempi brevissimi l’effetto che le persone che ne fanno uso ricercano sommamente: non sentire alcuna emozione. Nessun dolore, nessuna rabbia, nessuna solitudine. Questa sostanza anestetizza totalmente chi la assume… rende le persone appunto, degli Zombie. Lo straordinario documento realizzato da Faraboni ci racconta Kensington Ave a Filadelfia. E lo racconta con immagini che sono altrettanti pugni nello stomaco alle nostre illusioni.
“Avevo letto di questa droga, - racconta Faraboni - sapevo che a Philadelphia c’è un’alta concentrazione di utilizzatori, una comunità di seimila persone che sta in un unico quadrilatero della città, e sono andato a vedere, trovandomi con Bruce Gilden e un altro fotografo a documentare questo enorme disastro”. Corpi barcollanti, braccia martoriate da piaghe incancrenite, spazzatura, desolazione e su tutto la raggellante indifferenza della società fuori da quei margini: l’obiettivo di Faraboni è spietatamente minuzioso nel narrarci tutto questo.
